Stay Gold (Stevie Wonder from The Outsiders)

If you haven’t seen the movie, the first twenty seconds will be hard to watch. In that scene Ralph Macchio’s character, is in the hospital for 3rd degree burns after saving a group of school children from a fire. If you do remember the movie, it’ll give you a lump in your throat all over again. For me, this movie resonates much more than the bigger hits of similar genres of the day, Breakfast Club and The Big Chill. Probably because I grew up in an area where the social attitudes were / are very similar to the ones in the movie.

Based on the Robert Frost poem,

Nothing Gold Can Stay

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.

Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
